Denize Galiao, born Porto Alegre, Brazil in 1980, emigrated to Berlin, German in 1998. She enrolled in 1999 to attend Studienkolleg at the University Potsdam and studied African Studies at the Humboldt University Berlin in 2000.
Galiao apprenticed as a film and TV editor at the Northern German Television in Hamburg and has worked for various TV and Film productions. Her selected employment include WDR, Arte Strasbourg, Spiegel TV and editor for the NDR in Hamburg. In 2007 she interned at the ZDF foreign studio in Rio de Janeiro. Her first directorial work in documentary film, “Alessandra, Ich wachse jeden Tag" (2007), was nominated for the prestigious German television award, Adof Grimme Preise.
In 2008 she was accepted to the Documentary and Television Journalism Department at the University of Television and Film Munich. She has since worked as editor for Bayerischer Rundfunk while continuing her creative practice in directing and film production.
Denize Galiao's films have received several national and international awards such as IDFA in the Nederlands, Full Frame USA and It’s all true in Brazil. In 2021 she was invited to join the project "Wir schwarzen müssen zusammen halten! Eine Erwiderung" by the Theater Company Münchner Kammerspiele and Goethe Institut Lomé, where together with an international team, she explored the intersections between documentary, theater, and film.
